All you need to know

Belgium is a charming country that is rich in history and stands at the forefront of political leadership. Located in western Europe, Belgium has about 40 miles of seacoast on the North Sea, at the Strait of Dover, and is approximately the size of Maryland. The Meuse and the Scheldt, Belgium's principal rivers, are important commercial arteries. While Belgium may be best known for Hollywood action-hero Jean Claude Van Damme (a.k.a. the Muscles from Brussels), Belgian waffles and fine chocolates, this small country has a global impact! Belgium is home to the European Union’s headquarters as well as several international organizations including NATO. Belgium actually contains a lot of diversity within its compact territory! The country is divided into French- and Dutch-speaking (or Flemish) sides, and there is also a small German-speaking portion of the country. As a World Explorer in Belgium, you can have the chance to explore its thriving city centers or its legendary countrysides!

CHI works with trusted partners in Belgium to screen and interview potential host families. Our partner agency is very respected in the student travel industry. Placements with host families may be all over Belgium, so we ask that you be flexible with your eventual placement location. Please note that most placements are located short distances from major city centers as non-urban homes tend to be larger and more accommodating. You may also have the chance to experience the beautiful countryside. Belgium is also conveniently located near several other popular European countries. You can take a train to Amsterdam, Paris or even Berlin in just a few hours. Europe is also extremely well connected by affordable charter airlines. You can even hop on a cheap flight to Stockholm, Nice or Barcelona for a weekend getaway.

Learning French? We like to recommend Belgium as an alternative destination for French speakers. But don’t worry, you don’t need to speak the local language in order to apply for World Explorers. We have plenty of host families that are eager to host YOU!

What is the recommended age range for World Explorers traveling to this country?

Some of the overseas partner agencies we work with place restrictions on age. We recommend this destination for travelers ages 18-40+. Some older candidates may be considered, but we cannot guarantee it.

Cost Calculator

We understand that keeping the World Explorers cost down is as important as the life-changing experience you will enjoy. Hence, we prepared a cost calculator which shows the cost of the program (excluding airfare) compared to the cost of a standard vacation. The prices are calculated according to the destination chosen, the arrival and departure dates, and the length of your stay.

The length of your stay is an especially important factor: the longer you stay abroad, the cheaper the cost per day becomes.

CHI is a non-profit organization, but we still have fixed costs that are necessary for running the program. Our overseas partners are actually for-profit, and we must take that into consideration as well. Our partners do the work to find and screen excellent host families that match your interests and needs!
