The World Cup is considered “the world’s most widely viewed sporting event”.  The tournament is put on by FIFA and every four years 32 national teams compete in 64 matches to win the claim and title of the best soccer team in the world.

Here are 10 things you might not know about the World Cup

  1. It may not seem like it but World Cup stadiums are usually spread widely across the host country.  Sometimes they are thousands of miles apart.  This year games are being played on two different continents, Europe and Asia.
  2. While 32 teams compete, two teams, Brazil and Italy have won almost 50% of the tournaments.
  3. Mexico has the most World cup losses.
  4. Starting in 2026 the number of teams that participate in the World Cup will jump from 32 to 48.
  5. People love watching the World Cup.  Over 2.5 million tickets have been sold.
  6. Who says the United States doesn’t care about soccer?  This year the US has purchased the second most tickets to World Cup games (far behind Russia of course).
  7. This is the first World Cup in 60 years that Italy has not played in.
  8. Iceland is the smallest populated country to ever make it to the World Cup.
  9. While Pakistan may not have the best team, Pakistan manufactured soccer balls have been used in the World Cups since 1982.
  10. The winning team will receive $35 million and the runners-up cash prize is $25 million.  But don’t feel too bad for the other teams.  Each team that participates in the World Cup received $8 million!
