You must visit Monteliusvägen on the northern shore of Sodermalm Island.  There you will find a narrow walking cliff path with a majestic view of Lake Mälaren, city hall, and the beautiful architecture of Stockholm.  It is especially amazing during sunsets and sunrises.

Tip from CHI’s Anna Voitenko: “Visit during the summer to experience sunset at 10 p.m. or sunrise at 3 a.m. – you might as well do both!”

  4. Lyon, France

Lyon, the capital city in France’s Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, is known as the gastronomic capital of France and has more restaurants per capita than any other city in the country.  It is the home of Paul Bocuse, a French culinary giant who was named the ‘Chef of the Century’ and the ‘Pope of Gastronomy’.  Lyon is a listed World Heritage Site, with a large Renaissance-era old town, Roman ruins, historic industrial districts and also the 19th-century Presqu’île quarter.  Lyon sits on two rivers, the Rhône and Saône, and built its fortune on the silk trade.  There are secret passageways called Traboules that connect courtyards and streets, which the silk workers used to use.  You can’t mention Lyon without mentioning that it is home of le Guignol, a well-known puppet created in the 1700’s, and part of a show still performed throughout France today.

CHI’s Gwyneth Perrier says, “My husband opened a large door, which I would have thought would have let into someone’s home, but it was, in fact, one of these Traboules, or passageways.”

  5. King Salmon, Alaska

  7. Samarkand & Bukhara, Uzbekistan

Eight Places to See in 2018! 8

Along with Bukhara, Samarkand is one of the oldest inhabited cities in Central Asia.  Poets and historians of the past called it ‘Rome of the East’, as it prospered from its location on the popular trade route between China and the Mediterranean – the famed Silk Road.

CHI’s Kamilla Silin says, “Samarkand and Bukhara are the most magical ancient cities of Central Asia. Any traveler would want to get lost in the little streets, inhale the magnificence of ancient mosques and travel back to the times of caravans and the Great Silk Road while visiting these cities. But what makes this place even more appealing is the kindness of people and the deliciousness of the national food.”

  8.  Yoshino, Japan

Yoshino is a town in Japan’s Kii Mountains, east of Osaka. It’s the gateway to Mount Yoshino, known for Japan’s most famous cherry blossom viewing spot. It is said that the first trees were planted along its slopes more than 1,300 years ago, and today the mountain is covered with approximately 30,000 cherry trees.  The route most visitors take to view the blossoms winds from the railway station at the foot of the mountain ridge with various parks and viewpoints along the way.  The cherry blossoms of Yoshinoyama (as Mount Yoshino is called locally) typically start opening in late March or early April and reach full bloom around early to mid-April.

CHI’s Kristin Chasan says, “Seeing the cherry blossom trees in Japan is truly amazing.  Bring a picnic lunch and find a spot to sit and take in the beauty!”
