Discover Another Culture, Discover Yourself

Jonathan Georis, from Belgium, recently completed a ten-month homestay program as part of CHI’s Academic Year program.  Jonathan was asked to sum up what he learned as a high school exchange student with CHI.

“To sum it up I’d probably go for ‘discovery’. It sure seems logical and expected but it goes far beyond discovering another country and another culture, it’s about discovering people and their way(s) of living.  Discovering your own acceptance and tolerance levels and finding ways to push your inner boundaries.  Experiencing new foods (one of the best parts haha) and building lifetime relationships with people across the world.   Learning a language that also makes you reflect on your native language.

Missing things and people for sure but cherishing them even more once you’re back.  Leaving a piece of you abroad but bringing back so many amazing memories.  It’s basically all about other people but the main thing to discover is yourself.  Living that kind of experience makes you learn about yourself and change the way you look at pretty much everything. One of the best way to grow up.

The luckiest ones will have the chance to live in a lively, open-minded, sharing and loving family which will make you enjoy everything about your experience as they make you feel a real part of what’s going on in their lives for your entire stay!”
