CHI Chatter - July 2016 1

Dear CHI Friends,

Tom and I wish to take this opportunity to officially say good bye to our Sacramento Academic Program Administrator, Cathy Johnson. As many of you know, she has been involved with CHI for 32 years, first as a host family, then as a Group Homestay Teacher/Coordinator and later as an assistant APA/AA to Joan King. When Joan became the Academic Programs Director in the Main office, Cathy was ready to seamlessly slip into her administrative position. As a Teacher/Coordinator, Cathy’s job was to recruit and orient host families, teach English to the Japanese students, organize tours and parties and, in general, handle problems. By the time Cathy became the Sacramento Administrator, her experience was vast and deep. We quickly noticed that she never just did the minimum her job required. She put her heart and soul into the work and made it fun, encouraging, and inspirational.

To be an Administrator requires a special talent, maturity and sensitivity. While on one hand you cannot push people around, on the other you have to be strict so they come through on their commitments. Cathy found the perfect balance for this position. She had such a wonderful relationship with her Teacher/Coordinators that they would do anything to find her the families we all needed. Cathy enjoyed entertaining the Accompanying Teachers with dinners at her own home, building long-lasting relationships with our Japanese partners. As an APA, she worked tirelessly to open the 10-month high school program and found many host families who volunteered to host teenagers from around the world for 2 semesters. This is a very challenging program and again, her light spirit guided her Academic Coordinators through the exciting as well as rough times.

When Tom and I started CHI in 1980 in Japan, knowing the fickle nature of the Japanese marketplace, we gave our two programs (Group Homestay and AYP) perhaps 5 years. During the 1985 CHI Conference we were approached by somewhat agitated Area Administrators. They told us they saw CHI as a “real” employer and they insisted they wanted to retire at CHI. We were surprised, but also delighted. (What? They want to still be here 25 years from now? Were we even going to last that long? The whole notion was surreal…)

And now Cathy is actually retiring from CHI. Yes, that surreal notion is now real. The wonderful news is that Cathy’s spirit will stay on in the new Area Administrator, Susan Campbell, who has been groomed by her over the past few years. No wonder Susan slipped seamlessly into her new position just as Cathy did before her, so many years ago. Cathy’s own inimitable style inspired so many of us at CHI! I have been reading greetings on Facebook from her fellows and they all appreciated her humor and inclusiveness. She helped and inspired many along the way. She changed countless lives – of overseas students and American host families. How can we say “goodbye?” Well, we can’t. She is going to help us put together our next AYP Conference in New Orleans. We know we will see you again and again, dear Cathy. Soon.

With love and respect,
Lilka and Tom Areton

Celebrate J Day!

CHI Chatter - July 2016 2
CHI is excited to participate in J Day, a nationwide celebration of J-1 international exchange! Each year, thousands of international students and professionals visit the United States on J-1 exchange visitor visas. These students, teachers, au pairs, camp counselors, interns, and professional trainees greatly enrich the American homes, schools, businesses, and communities in which they live, study, and work. J Day is a fun celebration of the impact and value of these international exchange participants, as well as a great chance to raise awareness of the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program (EVP).Under the slogan “Eat. Play. Give.”, J Day brings international exchange participants together with their host communities to celebrate cultural diversity and share new American customs while having fun with games, food, and meaningful volunteer activities. It also allows local participants in a community to get to know one another.

CHI will celebrate with our local get together at the Great Meadow at Fort Mason in San Francisco, CA. Bay Area J-1 participants will be able to meet new friends, play games and win fantastic prizes!

In keeping with the theme, “Eat. Play. Give”, all participants are invited to give back by bringing one can of food as a donation to the San Francisco Food Bank.

If you are in the San Francisco Bay Area, we hope you will join us in celebrating J Day!

CHI Bike Safety Contest

At CHI we know that riding a bike is a convenient, cheap and healthy way to get around. Many of our participants use a bicycle every day.  Unfortunately, accidents can happen so wearing a helmet is very important.

We are running a summer contest encouraging out J-1 participants to “Show Us Your Helmet!”  We have received some great submissions so far!

Host a High School Exchange Student this Fall

CHI Chatter - July 2016 7

There is still time to host an exchange student this fall. Students from around the world are coming to America for the 2016-2017 school year! Students are 15-18 years old and attend your local high school for a semester or full academic year.

Volunteer host families are carefully matched with students based on a number of compatibility ratings, such as activities and interests, country of origin, and gender.

Host families provide the student with room and board, as well as an authentic American family cultural experience. The student, meanwhile, shares their culture and provides the family with an experience they will never forget.

We Will Miss You Cathy!

As Tom and Lilka mentioned in their opening letter, longtime CHI employee Cathy Johnson recently retired.  Cathy is loved by everyone that has had the pleasure to work with her.  Here are some photos and quotes from Cathy’s time with CHI.
“The word that comes to mind when I think of Cathy is “Fun”. She is such a wonderful person with an amazing zest for life. When Cathy walks in a room people are drawn to her, she has charisma, a beautiful smile and infectious laugh. Working in the exchange business has ups and downs but working alongside Cathy is always such a pleasure. Even when dealing with negative situations Cathy pushes forward in the most positive way. And yet, in those moments she still finds time to offer words of encouragement as well as how best to gain life lessons from those types of experiences. Cathy has taught me so much, not only has my work excelled from her years of experience dealing with teens and families, but my life outside work has been enriched as well. Cathy makes time to connect with people, she sticks to her promises and finds peace exploring the outdoors. It has been such a pleasure working with Cathy over the years. There are so many great memories like the time she brought a kayak paddle to conference as a “prop” for her presentation and the many presentations she has made from trips she has taken around the world explaining cultural differences and the beauty found in those differences. Additionally, I think Cathy may have missed her calling as a stage actor because her full costume “characters” she plays at conference will never be forgotten. Of course I am sad to see Cathy retire but that is only because I have sincerely enjoyed working with her. I truly wish Cathy all the best in her retirement and I hope she enjoys every moment of the beautiful life she has built.”
-Kristi Doyle”Cathy epitomizes the spirit of CHI. She cherishes each student and host family and finds unique ways to share her joy of life with everyone she meets. Every new experience for Cathy is an opportunity to learn and grow. What an amazing, kind, loving individual!” -Micki Lalonde

“Cathy is an incredibly kind and generous person with an exuberant spirit. She has a way with people and teens which made her perfect for this job. Big shoes to fill they are!” -Susan Campbell
