Overseas English Tutor

"I would certainly recommend this program as it is not too expensive and CHI provided a lot of support. I think this program was much better than a lot of other programs. I definitely had a fun and rewarding time in this summer to remember. I would love to return."

Experience the culture and excitement of living in another country with a host family by signing up for our Overseas English Tutor program. For anywhere from 1 to 3 months (your choice!), you will stay with a host family* and teach conversational English to them during your stay. They provide the room and board, you provide the casual, conversational tutoring (not a big time commitment, only up to 15 hours a week), and the rest of your time can be spent exploring the city and country you have chosen. Don't worry, no prior tutoring experience is necessary! What's more, you can even sign up for language classes of your own if you so request.

* In very rare instances in some countries, alternative housing options may be available (dormstay, apartment, etc.), and the tutoring may take place in a classroom instead of a home. When you inquire about a specific country, we will make these options clear to you.

Details:

  • Apply here, and we can place you in a program in just about any country you'd like to explore. Placements can be processed anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months, depending on the location and availability of host families. Call for more information regarding your specific country of choice.
  • By matching the criteria of potential host families with your preferences, we will match you up with an ideal host family.
  • For a maximum of 15 hours per week, you will teach conversational English to your host family.

Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age with a high school diploma;
  • Must be a citizen of the United States or Canada;
  • English must be your primary spoken language;
  • Must be respectful of family rules and local cultures.

Program includes:

  • Room and board - private room and meals;
  • Oxford Picture Dictionary teacher's book for tutoring;
  • Local support throughout your entire stay;
  • Assistance in securing travel insurance and discounted airfare (upon request).

How we place you with a host family:

Upon receipt of your application, your information will be sent to our partner in the country of your choice. An important part of this application is a letter directed to potential host families describing yourself and what you are looking for in a host family (click here to see a sample). Matching is based upon location and dates requested as well as hobbies and interests. Host family information will be presented to you for your approval before your program fee is due. To learn more about what our host families are looking for and what information we gather on them, take a look at a sample application that we have them fill out. Also, click here to view a sample letter that they write to potential OET's describing their interests.
