Welcome to the South Dakota Region

The capitol of South Dakota is Pierre. Gold was discovered in the Black Hills in the mid 1870's and South Dakota became a state in 1889. A very popular site to see is Mount Rushmore. This is the world's greatest mountain carving, measuring sixty feet high and five hundred feet up. There is something for everyone to do in this state such as golfing, beach combing, things to do for the outdoor enthusiast, history buff and explorer. There are events and festivals, one of which is the Festival of Presidents in Rapid City in June of 2008.
ACADEMIC YEAR PROGRAM
By volunteering to open your home and heart to the world's young people, you are donating to them an uncommon gift: an offer of friendship, a willingness to share yourself and your way of life, and a genuine interest in learning about other cultures and customs. CHI host families are special people of extraordinary goodwill and generosity of spirit. Most important of all, they are willing to make a difference in their own family, their community, their country and ultimately the world. For more information about hosting an international student contact Area Adminstator Candis Bell at chicandis@chinet.org.
