North and South Dakota were one territory until 1889. The state was largely unsettled until the construction of the railroad. The name "Dakota" was from the Dakota, Sioux tribe which lived in the region. North Dakota has a nickname called the Peace Garden State as there is such a garden on the northern border shared with Manitoba, Canada. When visiting the state be sure and go to the Theodore Roosevelt National Park and see Bison, wild horses, deer and elk. Agriculture covers more than 90% of North Dakota growing such items as rye and wheat and raising cattle, sheep and hogs. There are numerous excellent horse ranches throughout the state that teach riding, board & have stud services.

ACADEMIC YEAR PROGRAM

By volunteering to open your home and heart to the world's young people, you are donating to them an uncommon gift: an offer of friendship, a willingness to share yourself and your way of life, and a genuine interest in learning about other cultures and customs. CHI host families are special people of extraordinary goodwill and generosity of spirit. Most important of all, they are willing to make a difference in their own family, their community, their country and ultimately the world. For more information about hosting an international student contact Area Adminstator Candis Bell at chicandis@chinet.org.
