English Conversation Volunteers Abroad
Program Information
As part of our English Conversation Volunteers Abroad program, you will have the opportunity to teach conversational English to your host family while immersing yourself in the culture of the country you select.
Details:
- Apply Here. Complete the application and send it to us; we will confirm receipt. You will be asked to apply to three different countries. Placement processing may take up to 3 months depending on the location and availability of host families. If you have questions, please feel free to contact CHI.
- Taking your preferences into account and using the host family criteria, we will match you with a local family in one of the three countries of your choice.
- For a maximum of 15 hours per week, you will practice English conversation with your host family.
- The host family will provide you a room in their home and 3 meals daily.
Requirements:
- Must be at least 18 years of age with a high school diploma
- English must be your native spoken language
- You must agree to respect family rules and local culture
- 20 years of age recommended or one year of college preferred
Program includes:
- Room and board - room and meals
- Conversation aids to use with the host family
- Local support throughout your entire stay
- Assistance in securing travel insurance and discounted airfare(upon request).
How we place you with a host family:
Upon receipt of your application, your information will be sent to our partners in the countries of your choice. An important part of this application is a letter directed to potential host families describing yourself and what you are looking for in a host family (click here to see a sample). Matching is based upon location and dates requested as well as hobbies and interests. Host family information will be presented to you before your program fee is due.
After you pay the program fee you will be given the contact information for the family so you can get in touch with them before the program begins. How to apply:
- Complete the ECVA application.
- E-mail or mail your completed application to us.
- Mail your $100 Application Fee. Applications cannot be processed until your fee is received. You can pay by check or money order. We also accept either Visa or MasterCard payments. The Application Fee will be applied against the final price.

- Central Europe + Russia One month $999/ Two months $1,099/ Three months $1,199*
- South America One month $1,299/ Two months $1,399/ Three months $1,499*
- Western Europe + Japan $1,699/ Two months $1,799/ Three months $1,899*
*Price does not include travel insurance, airfare, or passport/visa costs.

Buddy Program:
Bring a Buddy! - Apply to our program with one or more friends and everyone who is accepted (including you) will receive $50 off their program fee!
Refer a Friend! - As a past participant, if you refer a friend to our program and their application is approved, you will receive a $50 referral bonus!
